Worried about wrinkles, retirement, or health problems? Aging can seem daunting, but it’s a reality we all face. The good news: healthy aging is possible. Let’s see what older Americans say is actually within our control.
What Do Elderly People Think?
About half of Americans over 65 say they are aging extremely or very well.
Income is a major factor: older adults with higher incomes rate their physical and mental health better, socialize more often, and pursue hobbies more actively.
Older adults are also more confident than younger people that they have a fair amount of control over the aging process.
Here are a few recommendations from older adults for healthy aging:
-
Maintain a nutritious diet.
-
Engage in regular exercise.
-
Keep up with medical appointments.
-
Save money and invest for the future.
-
Enjoy every moment and live with gratitude.
-
Be true to yourself and stay independent.
-
Help others whenever you can.
You can also follow the example of many older adults. About two-thirds have:
-
Created an advanced health care directive in case they’re unable to make their own medical decisions.
-
Discussed what should happen to their belongings after they die.
-
Written a will.
-
Talked with loved ones about their burial or funeral preferences.
Opinions Of People Under 65
Younger adults are much less certain about their future: nearly 70% are worried about aging, with finances as the top concern. Half of those under 65 aren’t confident they’ll have enough income to retire.
Given that most Americans hope to live to 91, it’s no wonder there’s some anxiety about what lies ahead. But what do older adults say is actually within our control?
What Can We Control?
Most older adults believe people have control over:
-
Physical health (67%)
-
Physical mobility (60%)
Fewer believe they can influence:
-
Mental sharpness (47%)
-
How old they look (38%)
If you’re concerned about mental sharpness, now is the time to focus on supporting your mental health. If you’re curious about supplements, be sure to check reliable research before making choices.
